Some of you may be familiar with Simon Sinek's famous TED Talk and book Start With Why (2009). If not you can check out the video here. I'm not Simon's biggest fan, but I must admit that I never forgot this particular message and I hope it stays with you as long as it has with me, because your "why" matters.
Your "why" is your reason of pushing forward, even when everything and everyone else is pushing you back. If you don't have a clear why, you will inevitably get pushed back by the pressure. Sometimes it's just a little push, sometimes it is to the point of no return.
In my case, the biggest question I had to answer was "what specifically about owning an escape room business makes me get excited to get out of bed in the morning?".
I have been playing escape games since 2015 and I was swept off my feet by them since that first experience. It was a dream come true for me. I grew up in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. A third world country, with surprisingly good access to American television. One of my absolute favorite shows was "Legends of the Hidden Temple". The set was amazing to me. As a child, all I ever wanted in life was to be able to go into fantastical worlds with mental and physical challenges, secret passages, and themed puzzles.
Every time I go into an Escape Room, I am taken back to those days where it seemed like an impossible dream reserved for those who were lucky enough to be on T.V. and I smile knowing that I was wrong. Everyday people can live the thrill too. So I found the answer to the question!
I am excited to own an escape room, because I have the freedom to be a child with the reach of an adult. It is a dream come true. I get to create games, brain teasers, clues; and then I get to share my playhouse with others. That's amazing to me!
When I originally wrote this post in 2018, Locksmith Escape Games was not open yet, and I finished the post with " there is still a lot that can get in our way, but as long as I still care about making that kid inside me proud, I will keep pushing forward". Today, we are nearing our 1 year anniversary, and we are currently facing the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic and those words ring true now as it did back then.
Summer 2008. I graduated High School that year and my parents gifted my sister and I a trip to Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. To this day, the ability of these parks to transport you into different realms leaves me in awe.
